“Jozifest - Press Release - 2011/12/14 - Regarding: Venue and Line-up Change:
Jozifest is proud to announce the venue change for the 2012 festival. Jozifest 2012 is a new and up and coming 2 day festival for the greater Johannesburg region. Originally planned to take place at the Riverbend Centre in Bloubosrand ( just on the boarder of Fourways) at the Cool Runnings Fourways complex will be changing venues as of today.
This decision did not come lightly to the organiser but after serious consideration as to whether the original venue was indeed the right and perfect place to host the festival , we have come to the conclusion that should we want to host the best possible event for both the acts/Musicians/Artists/Vendors and of course the public. Then this is not the correct venue.
Jozifest will as of this press release being released, be hosted in Newtown. The venues involved in this movement of the festival will be but are not limited to : The Woods, Townhall, Carfax and the neighbouring streets.
We feel that this is the right decision for the festival and festival goers as it will increases our capacity as well as our open/live hours. As stated earlier this decision did not come lightly but in order for us to deliver upon the best possible festival. We have decided to move forward and change to this new series of venues and confirm 100% that Jozifest 2012 will be held in Newtown.
We ask all public and Musicians/Artists/Vendors etc to support us on this decision and move forward with into what will surely be one of the highlights for entertainment in Johannesburg for quite sometime.
We thank you in advance for this support and look very forward to hosting this event in the most professional and industry abiding way.
Jozifest Management”

We had a chance to sit down with rising Jozi star Cut Key Low! This is what he had to say!
So who is CutKeyLow?
Since a little boy I have been amazed by music and instruments, obviously as a kid your perception on music is very limited as you don’t know much about much, but you do know if you like it or not.
I still remember trying to scratch old “Heidi Story Vinyl Records” I Had as a kid but not knowing what the hell I was doing, but wanted to do it because I had seen and heard it before… You know the whole “Monkey See, Monkey Do” kinda vibe…
As I got older, I realized that Music plays an exceptionally huge role in my life, so I started learning how to play instruments e.g. Guitar and messing around on friends drums and keyboards. Time passed and then when South Africa was first introduced (on a major scale) to the “RAVE” Scene as per say, I was exposed to the “DJ” again at an older age… and I was like… “I gotta learn how to do this…”
So I started learning how to Play House music, as I had not been exposed to many genres and in those days it was more really just “Dance Music”… and as time passed I started refining my style by playing various other genres.. Such as Hard House/Techno/Drum n Bass/Break-Beat and Eventually Hip Hop, this is what I became known for as “DJ Kevin” in the old days of Reality and Sublime Nightclubs. I went to Canada and America in 2008 for Travel and Networking, where I was sitting down the one day and I was in thought of, I needed to give myself a Stage/Performance Name… But not just any name, a name that describes I as an Artist/DJ/Performer and Producer… And that’s when I came up with CutKeyLow… a lot of people seem to get the annotation wrong, and they think Ohhhhh CutKeyLow, so you cutting kilos of drugs hey? I get that a lot… and it is understandable, but if you actually Break it up and look at the spelling of my name… you can see why I used that as a name to describe myself as an artist…
Cut = because as a Hip Hop DJ, you do a lot of “Cutting and Scratching’ amongst 100’s of other turntablism skills, but Cutting and Scratching been the backbone behind the art form, and as one many DJ’s and Producers know, you always cutting up samples for whatever reason.
Key = Well that is pretty self-explanatory in itself… Music is made up of Keys, notes, etc… So therefore it all starts coming together CutKey, because I am cutting up keys of music when I play…
Low = that is because the music that I play, very seldom consists of high keys… Most of the time it is Low… Like Samples and Baslines… and so on… So put my name together and you get CutKeyLow…

So we all know you’re an incredibly talented artist, but with all the dj’s out there today, one needs something that sets them apart. What makes you different and gives you an edge?
That is quite a tough question as there are sooo many Brilliant Artists across all genres of MUSIC here in South Africa, and so many of them have skills on their own level, which could fit into their style of Music they play, whether it be Rock, Jazz, DJ’s or even the street performer… So to break yourself away from the rest you really need to have something unique.
I like to think besides my stage performance and energy I give behind the DJ Box when I am playing to the people, is the fact of pushing and trying new innovative things in my sets, like juggling or scratching, using effects, Really getting the Crowd involved so they don’t feel like they just there to dance… I mean… What would a GOOD DJ BE WITHOUT anybody to listen to him or appreciate… He would be in his bedroom playing to his mirror.. So music is about the people… Some new Stuff I am working on Right now is to start doing some Rapping over Dubstep, yes it’s been done, but I want to Be the person spitting the Rhymes in the middle of my set… So Djing and Rhyming at the same time… But all in good time…
What are some of the highlights of your career as a DJ? Any top moments?
There have been quite a few moments in my DJ Career that have definitely been times to remember and still sometimes surreal… But I guess I could say of most memorable ones to date would definitely have to be when I played at Reality for the 1st time ever, and after my set I asked the owner if I could play there again as a guest DJ… and the answer I got in return was you have permanent residency, Which was my 1st Residency of My DJ Career, and not at your run of the mill Club, but Johannesburg’s hottest Club in its Day… It really felt like everything I had worked for is paying off and I am doing something right…
I could say another extremely important Highlight of my career would definitely be, when I entered the “Technics DMC World Scratch Championships” in 2009 and placed 3rd for Johannesburg which got a place in the finals down in Cape Town later that year. There was a lot of good competition that year well as there is every year… and I was nervous as hell I couldn’t even put the needle down on the record… But placing 3rd was just as good as coming 1st, die the fact the competition was so dope and out of the DJ’s I made it in the top 3.
You grew up musically a predominantly hip hop orientated DJ right? Tell us about the transition into drum n bass and dubstep.
Well I will start off by saying it wasn’t as easy as 1-2-3… I had been trying to get up into the Dubstep Scene since last year, and had been frowned upon by many, some been peers and some been fans, saying to me, you are a Hip Hop DJ not a Dubstep DJ… but not once did I ever say when I became a DJ.. That I would only play Hip Hop as a DJ.. I am a musician, and I do have my preferences as most do, but I am a firm believer a good DJ is a DJ that is versatile and can play anything… and now before where Hip Hop was my main preference I have now broadened my horizons to new genres and styles… but it never meant that Hip Hop means nothing to me now (as I still get booked for gigs across Johannesburg), I had built a really good reputation with Hip Hop but unfortunately it became extremely stagnant, as the crowd either wasn’t as supportive on the scene anymore as it was in the earlier days or more along the lines if it wasn’t their Boy performing then there would be no support (and sorry Music is music) you like it or hate, but you don’t have one DJ drop a track and nobody dances, and then 3 DJ’s later the same track gets dropped and just because it’s their boy playing now they jam… and that is what makes The Dubstep/Drum n Bass Scene so energetic, is if you play a sick track you will get a response no matter who is playing it, no matter how many times it’s been played, if it’s good they appreciate it… So after been one of the founders of Science Frikshun and been involved with Drum n Bass, and slowly been introduced to Dubstep through Science Friskhun/Inishi8 and Dubmental Crew… I started to appreciate it on a whole new level… With phat beats, Dirty Basslines, Grimey and Dirty, I thought it was time to try and take this on as a new Transition in my Career. So I saw where Dubstep was going in South Africa I thought let me start collecting some tracks and will see where it goes… I mean tell me how a huge bassline with some grimey dirty beats can’t make anyone wanna stomp foot…
Well like I said it’s a year later, and it has definitely boosted My DJ Career to a new level. This in turn has already landed me some Big Time Events again… Like Ramfest, Gaslamp Killer, FU-CHA, and many more… just to mention a few…
Which artists are you loving at the moment?
Should I reveal my secrets of the trade?? Hahahaha… just messing….
There is quite a list, But I will say… Ollie, Sub Focus, Vaski, Excision, Datsik, Nero, Borgore, Flux Pavillion, Tremourz and J. Rabbit, Genetix, Distinction, Bare Noize… and that’s just to mention a few…. The list could go on forever…

If you could play any gig what would it be and with which acts supporting you?
Unfortunately the gig of a lifetime to me would have been The Love Parade in Germany which sees over a million people… But that has all come to an end in 2010 after the unfortunate incident that happened there, but now days there are sooo many events and Festivals it’s hard to say what I would like to play at, But I would say currently Tomorrowland is definitely on the cards, and if I could get to play there, that would definitely be a dream come true…. It sees some of the world’s best artists showcasing and doing what they do… to a whole “community” of people there for one reason and on reason only… TO PARTY!!! And appreciate music… as for supporting acts… It’s hard to say… as there are too many that I would want there, acts from South Africa, to artists internationally too, so I would rather just be more content with the fact that I am playing there, because I am pretty sure whoever the supporting act would be, would still be DOPE or he wouldn’t be playing there in the first place.
What can we expect from CutKeyLow in the future?
Well I have been working on some projects and producing some Dubstep tracks, but I think it will be only mid next year before I start releasing them to the public, as there is a need for some refinement before it hits the masses, but besides that I am also networking with some Artists and Companies abroad to go do some shows in Florida, in the United States and definitely getting bookings for more shows in South Africa… I will be releasing a JoziFest Dubstep Mix… so Watch this Space because it will be coming out soon… I do have some mixes that have been released and if you go and check my profile
(www.facebook.com/pages/CutKeyLow/119069735427) they are available for free download… And also Stayed Tuned for CutKeyLow’s Dubstep Damage Vol. 3 Which is been released next week Wednesday…
